Kamens discussed the benefits of filing separately while married. Married couples generally have two options for filing taxes: married filing jointly (MFJ) or married filing separately (MFS). Filing status can affect tax rates, eligibility for certain tax benefits, and the amount of your standard deduction. Tax situations can change from year to year.  Major life events like having a child, buying a home, or taking out student loans affect your deductions and credits. 

Kamens suggests consulting a tax professional, “Often CPA’s produce worksheets which will show the final result of filing jointly vs separately, and a judgement can be based on that information.” Using tax software may be able to estimate tax liability, but it may not be able to address specific financial situations.
