Seth Kamens, CPA, MBA, Managing Member at Kamens & Associates, was a recent guest on “Business Legacy Podcast”, hosted by Paul Dio.
In conversation with Dio, Kamens touched upon how his firm has evolved over the years, following a non-traditional path. He shared, “I think of myself as a business owner who does accounting, not the other way around.”
Kamens openly speaks about how his career trajectory was anything but ordinary for an accountant. After working at several well-named financial and accounting firms, Kamens came up with his own way of doing things. ‘This is the operating philosophy for my firm. Think like the client. Ask what they’re trying to build. See the five or six things most CPAs don’t look for and/orprovide. Turn down clients you can’t help.”
Kamens emphasized the importance of showing clients that their work is being approached with thoughtfulness and genuine effort, noting, “We set scope and reasonable timeframes, that’s how we’ve evolved. We’ve become smarter on how we do these things. And we show our clients that we give a damn.”
Kamens offers his thought process on creating a work culture very unlike the ones he had experienced. “It’s critical to build a leadership culture that’s— encouraging, accountable, and never humiliating anyone in front of their peers. That builds trust.”
Kamens additionally discussed what makes his work meaningful and motivating, highlighting the satisfaction he gets when helping clients reach a point when they feel confident and at ease with their own business. He explained, “We put a plan in place, and when clients see that and have an ‘aha’ moment; that’s what I enjoy. It makes people feel better about themselves.” He continued, “I’ve had many cases where clients are stressed about one part or another of their business. Once that pressure is alleviated, they can worry about expanding their revenue, or their market share, whatever it is, and its because they feel comfortable with our firm.”
