Seth Kamens, CPA,MBA, Managing Member at Kamens & Associates, was recently quoted in a Mass Mutual article where he discussed early retirement offers.

Kamens touched upon why companies offer early retirement. For employees considering an early-retirement offer, the decision can become even more complicated when there is uncertainty about the company’s future plans and the possibility of layoffs. Kamens continued, “There’s most likely a reason they’re offering it to you. If they’re getting rid of a division, your job will be in jeopardy one way or another.”

Kamens additionally discussed the possibility of negotiating an early retirement offer. “If they are asking you for early retirement, to a degree there is leverage on your end and to a degree there is leverage on theirs,” Kamens noted the ability to negotiate “depends on the rationale for the severance and how long you’ve been there.”
